Elizabeth Norman

Coloratura Soprano

In just a few years, coloratura soprano Elizabeth Norman has gained a reputation as an accomplished interpreter of contemporary composers. A winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Finals, The American Opera Society Competition and the Union League Civic and Arts Foundation Award, she appears annually with the Grant Park Symphony in Chicago, as well as with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Her active career ranges from solo recitals, chamber music performances to television and radio recordings.
Ms. Norman has performed concerts and oratorios around the world on some of the most well known stages, including the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, the White House, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Musikverein in Vienna, as well as in Italy, Israel the African Countries of Madagascar, Mauritus, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda for the United States Information Agency.


Highlights from Ms. Norman's performances include a world premiere oratorio by Paul Schoenfield conducted by John Nelson, Knoxville Summer of 1915, Mahler's Fourth Symphony with Symphony II of Northbrook, the Elgin Symphony and the Northbrook Symphony. Ms. Norman has also appeared in La Boheme and La Cenerentola with the Lyric Opera in the neighborhoods production, Bach's Wedding Cantata with the Chicago Symphony Chamber Ensemble and Carmina Burana with the Grant Park Symphony. This season's concerts include an American opera by Logan/Harrison with the Black Music Repertory Ensemble at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, Hayden's Creation with the Naperville Chorus, the Brahms Requiem and Exsultate Jubilate with the Duluth Superior Symphony and Michael Torke's Book of Proverbs with the Grand Park Symphony.


Ms. Norman holds a B.A. in Education and a Concentration in Voice from Morgan State University in Baltimore and a M.M. in Vocal Performance from DePaul University in Chicago where she studied with Norman Gulbrandsen.


Highlights from Norman’s performances include three world premieres D’vorah by Paul Schoenfield conducted by john Nelson, Doxology by Logan/ Harrison with the B.M.Repetory Ensemble, and Aurora by Augusta Read Thomas conducted by Daniel


Barenboim, a Strauss-Gershwin Gala concert and video recording in Vienna with the Strauss Festival Orchestra conducted by Peter Guth and John Morris-Russell as well as an appearance with Wynton Marsalis in fox-Television Christmas Special singing his arrangement of Silent Night. The Opening of the famed Millennium Park and performances of Mahler’s Second, Fourth and Eighth symphonies, both Mozart and Brahms Requiems, Bach Cantatas and symphonic works of Strauss, Haydn, Barber, Copland, Villa-Lobos and Orff.


Last season included: Carmina Burana with the Duluth Symphony, Bach Cantata 51 with the Bach Festival of Evanston, a “Gershwin Tribute” with the Richmond Symphony, the Opening concert for the Jewel Box Series broadcast performance for WFMT Radio featuring songs of Haydn, Schumann, Schubert, Brahms, Debussy, Berlioz and others, concerts with the Chicago Sinfonietta, several holiday appearances, and Mahler II with the Eugene Symphony. This season include Carmina Burana with the Chicago College of the Performing Arts as well as a return performance at the “Bach Festival” in Evanston Illinois, CSO’s “Fridays Night at the Movies” singings Faust arias to “the Phantom of the Opera” the Black and white film staring Lon Chancy with Dennis James on Organ, conducted by Richard Kaufman, Poulene’s Gloria in Memphis Tennessee, Handel’s Messiah with the Engine Symphony, an evening of music in recital with Cellist, Larry Block, and a concert in Tribute to African American Composer for the “Great Black Music.”
